J. Scott Litton, Jr., MD, FAAFP
John Scott Litton, Jr., M.D. is a lifelong native of Lee County, Virginia. He grew up in the Dot community near Pennington Gap. He graduated with honors from Lee High School in 1991.
He has two daughters: Mary Elizabeth "Libbey" and Caroline. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Pennington Gap
The University of Virginia College at Wise (previously Clinch Valley College) was Dr. Litton's undergraduate alma mater, and he graduated with honors in 1995 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. During his years at UVa-Wise, Dr. Litton began participating in several active roles of leadership. He was a resident assistant for three years and also served as Chair of the Honor Court, a student sponsored discipline organization for the college. Dr. Litton also began to enjoy a role as teacher by serving as laboratory teaching assistant as well as tutoring students in biology, chemistry and physics. He also active in athletics at the collegiate level, playing for the golf team during his college years.
After finishing his undergraduate education, Dr. Litton traveled to Charlottesville to enroll in medical school at the University of Virginia. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree in May 2000. Upon completing medical school, he began his post-graduate medical education in Family Medicine at the Spartanburg Family Medicine Residency Program in Spartanburg, SC. During his residency training, not only did Dr. Litton complete all of the necessary requirements needed to graduate after the three year period, but he also completed additional training in performing endoscopic procedures. He also worked many extra hours in emergency departments of local community hospitals, in order to increase his exposure time to patients and sharpen his acute care skills.
Dr. Litton is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He was recently given the title of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He also carries memberships with the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association. He also serves as a preceptor to medical students from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and family medicine residents from residency programs in the southeast. He is a preceptor for the Southwest Virginia Graduate Education Consortium.
Dr. Litton and his family are proud residents of Lee County. He looks forward to many years of serving his neighbors and becoming an integral part of their healthcare and well being. Dr. Litton constantly reminds his patients that prevention is the best medicine.
